A few words about the history of Cretan Turban ...
The traditional head scarf is a part of the costume and this is a red folding fez with black tassel or "turban" with form as large handkerchief. By the interwar period Cretans wore mainly the folding red fez with a long tassel, which, to emphasize that has no relation to the conical fez Turks.
At the same time wore a long scarf and before getting the Turkish name "turban" called "Petsa". A type "Petsas' Cretans wore from the15th century. Wraps it in their heads and let the ends fall on the shoulders, front and rear. Older years the "Petsa" wrapped in the neck, has wider edges, which fell on the shoulders and said 'Stola". The "Petsa" called "tzevres, when the Turks conquered Crete. The turban (headscarf), formerly was a colorful silk oblong scarf, the famous' lachouri "which many Cretans wraps the folding of the red fez.
We know that the modern black knitted silk turban, which is nowadays the traditional Cretan head scarf, with dense fringe-like tears, made his appearance in the second quarter of the 20th century in central Crete. It is said that a lot of fringe are to show the many years of Ottoman rule in Crete and symbolize, in their shape, sorrow and grief caused by the holocaust of Arkadi Monastery in 1866.
